The Amigos - 1949

Every year, from the time I was about 8yrs old, I have gone on "Girl's Vacation" with my Mum.  When we began, it was her and I, my Gram and my Great Aunt Madeleine.  Over the years, it has also grown to occasionally include an aunt or two, my best friend, and now my two daughters, who are 8 and 13.

We typically pick a New England town, though we have also visited Prince Edward Island a few times, and we get away for 4 days in August.  It's a wonderful time for the different generations of women in our family to spend time together and learn from each other.

This year, my Great Aunt Madeleine gave my Mom this fantastic picture of her and my Gram with their "girls group" circa 1949.  It was called "The Amigos" and this was their Christmas Party.  Does it get any cuter than that??

It's a tradition that has certainly helped to define who I am, and I plan to continue with my girls as they get older.

Movie Review - Moonrise Kingdom

Saturday evening, I went to see Moonrise Kingdom with my best pal.  I had already decided I was going to love it before I even saw it because I fell in love with the preview and the images from the movie.  Fortunately, I was not disappointed :)

The story is set in the 60's off the coast of New England (always a favorite setting for me, since I AM a New Englander ;-).  It tells the tale of Sam and Suzy, two quirky twelve year olds who meet, fall in love and make a pact to run away together into the wilderness (handily enough, Sam is a Khaki Scout.)

Some of my favorite parts of the movie:

  • The narrator was a dyed in the wool New Englander.  I laughed everytime he came on the screen just because he was so perfect.
  • Ed Norton as the camp counselor = Perfection
  • The costumes, of course :)
  • Suzy packed a suitcase of books and a record player to run away with.  A girl after my own heart <3
  • The supporting cast (including Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Bruce Willis and Tilda Swinton) was just fantastic.

All in all, it was humorous in a quirky, fun sort of way (as you would expect from Wes Anderson) and visually gorgeous to watch.  I highly recommend it!
