Fashion Obsession - The Yellow Swing Coat

I have to confess to a long time obsession with the yellow swing coat Cate Blanchett wears in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button".  There's something about the color and the way the coat swirls around her that caught my attention and has stuck with me ever since the first time I saw the movie.

I've been on the hunt for a similar coat ever since.  There are no pictures of it online, but here is the clip from the movie:

Seeing the movie on TV again last week has renewed my desire to track down a similar coat or make one myself..then, as luck would have it, I got an email about McCall's fall pattern offerings, and wouldn't you know it THIS gem was included:

McCalls M6446
Pretty similar, right?  A few modifications and I think I can get pretty close to the swing jacket!  Now I just need to find the right material...

Hugs and Smooches,
D

  1. It's a lovely shape and I would love to have a Kelly Green or Mustard Yellow Swing coat, that would be so lovely!!! As for New England Fall, I'm hoping to experience my first one soon! I am planning a trip to Boston to visit my bff...not sure what part you're in. Any thrifting/ antiquing in that area you'd recommend?

  2. Boston is so much fun! My thrifting tends towards the vintage clothing variety (although I do pick up vintage housewares and sewing or knitting items when I find them!) The Garment District in Cambridge is amazing and they have a Dollar a Pound room where you fill a garbage bag full of clothes and pay $1 per pound. http://www.garmentdistrict.com/ Cambridge is a great area in general for vintage shopping, and this site is a good resource for finding shops http://www.thethriftshopper.com/city/Boston/MA/1.htm

Let me know how you enjoy your visit to NE!

  3. What a lovely idea to recreate that coat. I love the idea of a bright colored coat in general - so many seem to come in black, grey, navy . . . blah blah blah. I would love to see you make this any bright color (but I do love yellow).

  4. I agree Anabelle, so many coats only come in neutrals, and I'm not a neutral kinda girl ;) I'm on the hunt for the perfect yellow fabric, but if I don't find it, I DO have several yards of kelly green wool crepe that would do nicely!
